The Liberal Democrats are today preparing for the start of their party conference in Bournemouth, with leader Nick Clegg keen to add to the mounting pressure on the government.Speaking to politics.co.uk at a lunch ahead of the opening day of speakers, Mr Clegg claimed his party are emerging as genuine players in the UK's political landscape because of Labour's continuing turmoil. Today, two more government MPs have spoken out in favour of a leadership election challenge to prime minister Gordon Brown, who appears to be losing the confidence of his own party. And Mr Clegg said: "We are watching the death throes of the labour party. "I don't think there is any way back for them. I believe we are emerging as the only progressive party in British politics."
