Mr Clegg easily won a vote on whether to adopt a policy of tax cuts for low and middle income families, despite protests from some in the party that it was now occupying the same space as the Conservatives. He is expected to return to that theme today. But the debate, and the conference in general, failed to receive the level of media coverage Mr Clegg would have hoped for. The party conference is one of those rare times the Liberal Democrats can rely on definite media coverage, but the financial chaos on both sides of the Atlantic and Gordon Brown's continuing leadership nightmare have robbed them of vital attention. Despite not suffering from any particular threat to his leadership, Mr Clegg will want to end the conference on a strong note, sending his members home with a smile on their face. The speech is set to be delivered at 12:07 BST.
